Most retaining walls in Phoenix require a permit. Some require engineer-stamped plans. Here’s how the requirements work — and what’s at stake if you skip the process.
Father and Son Masonry has been delivering structural masonry, concrete, and demolition services across Arizona since 1994. Founded by Phoenix natives David and Karen Carrillo, the company has grown alongside the Valley, playing a direct role in building the communities and commercial spaces that shape the city today. We specialize in structural modifications and complex commercial renovations, delivering every project with precision, professionalism, and reliability contractors can count on.
We build for generations. Our master masons combine time-honored techniques with modern engineering to transform cmu into a lasting legacy for your business or home.

We start with a site visit and plan review. From there we provide a written, itemized bid that specifies block type and supplier, rebar schedule, footing dimensions, concrete PSI, and permit scope. You get a number you can actually evaluate — not a single line with no breakdown.
Most of the questions we get from GCs and PMs fall into three areas. On bidding: we review plans and scope documents, provide itemized bids with material specifications, and can turn around estimates within 48–72 hours for standard scopes. On scheduling: we work within your project timeline, coordinate directly with your superintendent, and flag any permit or inspection phasing requirements upfront so there are no surprises mid-build. On jobsite coordination: David or Karen Carrillo is personally on-site for every project — not a crew lead — which means decisions get made in the field without going through a chain of calls. If you have a set of plans you'd like us to review, send them over and we'll come back with a written scope and number.
Yes. We regularly bid and build from architect-stamped plans, structural engineer drawings, and city-submitted permit sets. For projects that require engineer-stamped structural plans — retaining walls over 4 feet, load-bearing walls, foundations with surcharge — we coordinate directly with the engineer of record as part of our standard scope.
We work with CMU block from Old Castle, Superlite, and AZ Best Block; structural rebar per code schedule; and concrete mixed to project-specified PSI. All material specs are documented in the written bid so GCs and owners have what they need for submittal packages and inspection records.
Every project is backed by Arizona's standard ROC 2-year workmanship warranty — documented protection on labor and structural craftsmanship. We've operated under this standard since 1994. If something isn't right, we make it right. No disclaimers, no runaround.
